Back to Ornamental Plastering

As far back as we have reasonably been able to trace, this record begins with ---------

My Great, Great, Great, Grandfather, James Barlow, (born 1789) a Blacking Maker, and a widower with two sons, Edwin, (born 1817) and Morgan (born 1821) Married, Elizabeth Solding, (born 1806) a spinster, at the Parish Church of Manchester, in the County of Lancaster, England on April, 3,1828. We have no certain knowledge of children born to James from his marriage to Elizabeth.

My Great, Great, Grandfather, Edwin Barlow, (born 1817) In Manchester, England , and (died Feb. 26,1893) at Flushing, Michigan, U.S.A... He married first, Harriet Bacon Matley, (born 1821) on April 30,1839. Children born to Edwin and Harriet in England were........James (born 1840)....John M.b1841....Edwin b1842....Alfred b1844....Maria b1847. A second daughter, Mary, was born to them in 1850. at Flushing, Mich. I am taking the liberty of assuming that Maria was lost, perhaps due to the hardships encountered on the fifteen week voyage from Liverpool to the USA in 1848. I make this assumption because she does not appear on the 1860 census at Flushing. Edwin and Harriet appear to have separated in the 1850s as she is recorded as Hanna Matley and living with her children at Flushing in the 1860 census.

Edwin married a second time on March 10, 1867, to Elizabeth Way, (born 1825?) Elizabeth must have brought her children from an earlier marriage into this household, because, in the 1870 census for Flushing there are children in the home,, Oliver age 14.... William age 13....Elizabeth age 10....and John age 2, who was born about a year after Edwins marriage to Elizabeth., and there are none of Edwins children from his marriage to Harriet present. Only John is young enough to be Edwins child.

My Great Grandfather, James Barlow, (born March 12,1840) at Manchester, England (died Nov. 23, 1916) at Oscoda, Michigan, came to America with his family when he was eight years old, and settled with them at Flushing Mich. In 1866 he relocated to Au Sable, Mich. On August 20,1869 he received a Grant on eighty acres in Iosco County, Mich. The site was on the west side of Oscoda and was known as, "Riverside Farm".

James married Sarah G. Hollester (a widow) at Oscoda, Michigan on May 9, 1870, and their children were,.... Lillian, (a child from Sarah's earlier marriage who became adopted and assumed the Barlow name)....Helen 1870....Estella 1872....Hubert James 1874....Thomas Elmer1877. Without us knowing what becomes of Sarah, James marries a second time on Feb. 14, 1880 to Josephine "Josie" Cotrell Purdy, (born 1861 died April 16, 1939.) Children of this marriage were, John M 1881.....Walter Edwin1883 .... Nelson J 1884....Ida May1886....Mary Belle 1888....Inez Vivian1989....and Glen A 1892.

My Grandfather Thomas Elmer Barlow, (born Jan. 7,1877, died 1957) married Rhoda Brown (born June 4, 1879 died March 4, 1940) on April 12, 1899., In Iosco County Mich. Their children, were in descending order,....Elmer born1900... Walter Hazen born June 15, 1901....Eugene 1906 ....Irving?....Sylvester? ....Mary?. Both Grandfather Tom, and Rhoda are buried at Pinecrest Cemetery in Iosco County.

My Father Walter Hazen Barlow, (born June 15, 1901, Au Sable, Mi. died may?,1955 Buelah, Mich.) He is buried with his father Thomas, and his mother Rhoda, at Pinecrest Cemetery in Iosco County Mich. It's my understanding that Walter's grandfather James, and step-grandmother Josie, are also buried here.

Walter married (1) Gladys Monroe Vail born 1900) at Detroit in 1920. Gladys had a child at the time of her marriage to Walter.1 i.e. Robert John Vail (born Oct.18,1918) at Detroit, (died Aug.10,1985) at Farmington Hills Mich.). I have copies of quite a few affidavits I have collected...Marriage certificates, Census reports, Birth certificates, Obituaries, Newspaper articles and ect. on file to support this report, including a copy of the Land Grant to James, signed by Ulysus S. Grant.

James Barlow of Manchester was a "Blacking Maker". This is the trade of mixing components making a stain and polish for leather.

Edwin and his family spent fifteen weeks at sea, on a sailing vessal making the trip from Liverpool, England to America.

James Barlow of Iosco County, Mich. was a highly respected merchant, and at one time the "Marshal" of Oscoda according to his obituary in the Oscoda paper.

In regards to Gladys Monroe Vail, Walter H. Barlows first wife.... Her mothers maiden name was Hinie Richie, (from Canada,) and we refered to her always as "Nana". Hinie was married to a Monroe, and he is the father of Gladys. Hinie next married a Vail, and Gladys took that last name.. Hinie later married Edward P. Quinius from New Orleans. All three of them are buried at Mt Olivite Cemetery at Detroit, Mich.

Walter Hazen Barlow was married a second time to Marjorie ? and was living at Beulah, Mich. at the time of his death.
